A close hideaway
The Tipopugro lagoon is a beautiful, yet not-so-known, spot to visit, ideal for nature lovers. It is located in the Antisana Ecological Reserve, in the Pichincha Province, Ecuador, at an altitude of 3.318 m.
The environmental temperature oscillates between 8ºC and 16ºC, and the water’s between 10ºC and 15ºC. Tipopugro was formed due to secondary eruptions of the Antisana Volcano and has a perimeter of 900 m., approximately.
What can I do here?
Some of the activities you might enjoy in this place are sport fishing, kayaking, hikes around the lagoon, barbecues, and camping. If you are just looking for a relaxing day, you have the option of going to one of the nearby restaurants (less than a 5-minute walk from the lagoon), and having a nice breakfast or lunch, while enjoying a panoramic view.
If you are an adventurous and sports type of person, with a solid swimming background, you could also swim here. For this, you need to talk beforehand with the place’s administrator in order to confirm if there are any requirements you need to meet. Keep in mind that due to its ubication and altitude, the water is cold (as previously indicated). Though not mandatory, it is suggested that you wear a wetsuit to protect yourself from the cold water. Additionally, it is also recommended to swim using a swim buoy and to rent a kayak that accompanies you along your swim.
How do I get there?
The recommendation is going by car, taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to get there from Quito, Ecuador’s capital city. The road is mostly in good condition, so any type of car could reach this place (most of the route is paved, with some graved sections in between).
How much do I have to pay?
You will need to pay a fee of no more that USD 5 per person, which gives you access to the parking lot, to some hike routes, and to an area where you can practice sport fishing or have a barbecue. If you plan to camp, you might need to pay an additional fee of around USD 10 per person.
