However, Papallacta is more than just hot springs. The area is surrounded by cloud forests, paramo landscapes, lakes, and hiking trails, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Travelers visit Papallacta for:

  • Thermal hot springs and spa experiences.

  • Swimming.

Best Hot Springs in Papallacta

The most famous- and often considered the most expensive- thermal complex in the region is Termas de Papallacta, a well-known spa resort offering thermal pools, massages, accommodations, and wellness treatments.

Visitors could choose between public thermal pools, private spa facilities, relaxation treatments, lodging. The pools vary in temperature, allowing guests to alternate between warm and hot baths. Prices might vary depending on the services you acquire and areas you choose to access; if you opt for the Spa’s thermal pools, there is an entrance fee of USD 25 per person.

If you are on a tighter budget, there are other options with more affordable prices. One of this options is Termales Jamanco, with a around-USD-5 entrance fee per person; while not a high-end service like the complex previously mentioned, it also offers the services of thermal pools, lodging, and restaurant, with a good price-benefit ratio. In addition, there is a lagoon called Laguna de Papallacta, where you will be able to take a boat ride, practice sport fishing and even swimming (beware that the temperature of the lagoon oscilates between 10ºC and 14ºC.).

How to Get to Papallacta from Quito

Papallacta is really accessible, hence its popularity among people from Quito.

  • By Car. The drive from Quito takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes if you start your drive from the downtown; from the valleys, the duration could be less than an hour. Traffic and weather conditions (not uncommon) might also condition how long it takes to arrive at Papallacta; moreover, this zone is often crossed by spectacled bears, in which case, traffic must stop until they have completely crossed the road. The route to Papallacta follows the E20 highway, from which you will get glances of the Antisana Volcano if the day is clear.

  • By Bus. Public buses regularly depart from Quito’s Quitumbe Terminal toward Papallacta and nearby Amazon-region towns. This is the most affordable option for budget travelers.

  • By Tour. Many agencies in Quito offer guided day tours to Papallacta that include transportation, entrance fees, and optional activities.

Best Time to Visit Papallacta

Papallacta can be visited year-round, but the weather is often cool, foggy, windy, rainy, and unpredictable due to the high altitude.

  • Dry Season (June to September). Better for visibility, hiking, and cooler nights.

  • Rainy Season (October to May). Greener landscapes, frequent fog and rain, fewer crowds.

Regardless of the time you choose for your visit, you will be able to enjoy and relax in the hot springs.

Things to Do in Papallacta

  • Relax in the Thermal Pools. By far, the main attraction and what comes to mind when hearing the word Papallacta. Enjoying a relaxing day from naturally heated thermal waters while surrounded by forests and the view of the Antisana.

  • Explore Hiking Trails. Papallacta offers several hiking routes through high-altitude ecosystems and cloud forests. Some trails lead to lagoons and scenic viewpoints. One of these trails is the Peñas blancas trail, part of the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve; it owes its name to the various big lighted-color rock formations along the route, a 4-hour-round hike, that reaches the maximum elevation of 4000 m. to 4100 m.

  • Swimming. A relatively recent activity in the area. Even though there are plenty of lagoons in Papallacta, the Laguna de Papallacta is one of the few where one can actually practice the sport, thanks to its accessibility and closeness to the access road, avoiding any walk before arriving at the lagoon. The increasing popularity as a swimming spot is due to the rising interest in open water swimming among Quiteños and to the possibility it offers to practice and acclimatize before actual competitions. Some precautions you should have when swimming here are using a wetsuit (unless you be willing to stand the cold temperatures of the water- 10ºC to 14ºC-), renting a boat that follows your swim and gives you assistance if needed, and using a swimming buoy.

  • Enjoy Local Food. Travelers can try traditional Ecuadorian dishes such as: Locro de papa (a potato and cheese soup), grilled trout, Empanadas, and Canelazo (a hot cinnamon drink). I recommend to try out the fresh trout, especially popular in the region due to the cold mountain rivers. There are restaurants for all the budgets; you can choose to eat either inside a Complex- with generally higher prices-, or outside of them in the town, with more affordable options.

Important Travel Tips for Papallacta

  • Bring warm clothing. Temperatures are usually cold, especially in the morning and evening. Waterproof jackets are highly recommended.

  • Prepare for the altitude. Because Papallacta sits at high elevation, some visitors may experience mild altitude symptoms. Drink water, avoid heavy meals, and move slowly if needed.

  • Pack a Swimsuit, sandals, and the necessary gear. Hot spring facilities require swimwear, and sandals are useful around wet areas to prevent slips and infections on your feet. Most of the complexes will provide (and require) a swimming cap before you enter the pool; even if they do not require it, you could take with you a swimming cap just in case. And of course, do not forget to carry an extra towel on your bag.

  • Protect electronics from moisture. Fog and rain are common, so waterproof bags can help protect phones and cameras.
