Best beach for sea lions and snorkeling in the Galapagos

La Loberia (literally “place of the sealions”) is a beach on the southwestern coast of San Cristobal Island (Galapagos) and is known for the close viewing of sealions and for being a good spot for snorkeling.

The San Cristobal’s Loberia is the most celebrated of the Archipielago, though there are others loberias in the Galapagos, like La Loberia from Floreana Island.

How to get there

• Distance. It is roughly 3 km. from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno’s center. It is reachable by walk, bike, or a short taxi ride.
• Walking. An almost 30-minute walk from the city’s center. Expect some uphill and downhill stretches; bring water and sun protection, since the sun and environmental dryness usually hit hard in the Galapagos.
• Taxi. It takes around 3 to 5 minutes to get from the city’s center to La Loberia entrance; the taxi rate is between USD 3 and USD 5 per way, and it is a convenient option to save some time and avoid the Island’s strong sun. Coordinate the way back at an agreed time with the same driver that takes you there.
• Bicycle. You can rent a bicycle for a half-day or full-day, and go to La Loberia. Once you arrive at La Loberia, you will have to leave your bike at the entrance, before starting a small trail that will lead you to La Loberia. There are bike racks where you can leave your bike.

What to expect on site

• Wildlife. Sealions are the main attraction; as soon as you enter the beach, you will see plenty of them lying down on the sand. You may also see iguanas in the beach rocks, and reef fish while snorkeling. Take all the waste you generate back with you, for there are not trash cans inside the area.

• Activities. Snorkeling in calm bays, surfing when conditions allow, beachcombing, and photography. Snorkel visibility is often good and many visitors rate La Loberia highly for marine encounters.

• Crowds and cost. It is a free public beach and is bigger and usually less crowded than downtown beaches like Mann beach. However, you might still find big groups now and then, especially in rush hours and during high seasons.

Practical tips

• What to bring. Reef-safe sunscreen, hat/cap, water, snorkel gear (you can rent in town if you do not own one), sturdy sandals/shoes (the trail is uneven, sandy and rocky), and a towel. Consider there are not any kiosks or shops within La Loberia, so try not to forget anything you may need.

• Safety. keep a respectful distance from wildlife; never touch or feed them.

• Timing. Late afternoon offers great light for photos and calmer crowds; mornings are best for clearer snorkeling.

• How long to stay. Two to three hours should do it, including the round trail, some beach and snorkeling time. The entry and exit trail take about 15 to 20 minutes each, so take into account that time when coordinating your pick up time with your driver.
