Best tips for visiting Laguna de los flamingos
Laguna de los flamingos (Flamingos lagoon), often known as Poza de los flamingos, is a shallow, brackish wetland just west of Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island (Galapagos), and is one of the most reliable places in the Galapagos to spot the American (Galapagos) flamingo feeding and nesting.
The lagoon’s pink hues come from flamingos’ diet of shrimp and small crustaceans, and the site is framed by mangroves and volcanic backdrops that make for striking photos.
How to get there
- Distance. A short walk or bike ride from Puerto Villamil’s central park, roughly a 5-minute walk. You can use Google Maps to see the route and guide you. Since this lagoon is on the way to other landmarks, it is common to combine the visit along with other destinations, especially with the route to the celebrated Muro de las Lagrimas.
- Access. Follow the marked trails and wooden boardwalks; some sections may be uneven or under repair, and some sections might be muddy, so wear sturdy shoes/sandals.
- Price. This is a free attraction and open to the public; you walk right to the lagoon trail, as if you walked into a public-access park.
Best time to visit
Early morning, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and late afternoon, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., offer the most bird activity and the best light for reflections and color. However, keep in mind that the number of flamingos, and even their presence at all, might vary with water levels and season; there are hours or days when you may see no flamingos and other times when you may see many of them. Going to the lagoon at recommended times does not guarantee watching any flamingo.
Besides flamingos, expect to see shorebirds, and other wetland species; sightings are peaceful and often close but maintain respectful distance.
Practical tips
- Photos. Avoid disturbing birds; shoot during golden hours for warm tones and mirror reflections; do not use flash.
- Bring. Binoculars for a better appreciation of the species.
- Respect. Stay on boardwalks and marked trails, do not cross barriers even if these are unrepaired, and keep noise low, for flamingos are sensitive to disturbance.
- Combine visits. This is a relatively fast activity to do (30 minutes will do it, including the time that takes you to get there), so pair this visit with another one to make the most of your day, like a biking ride to the Muro de las Lagrimas, or a half-day at Puerto Villamil beach.
- Protect yourself from sun. Isabela can be hot and humid; take with you water, a cap/hat, and sunscreen; if viable, avoid midday heat.
Laguna de los flamingos is a compact, accessible nature stop right in the middle of the town, perfect for photographers and bird lovers who might not have a lot of time to spend on the island, but still want to visit a landmark. Even if there is not any guarantee of actually finding a flamingo, the odds are high, and it will cost you literally USD 0 and maximum 30 minutes to include it within your itinerary.
