Terjamanco: an affordable option to visit the Papallacta terms

An ideal cost-benefit terms option near Quito

Terjamanco (also known as Jamanco Terms) sits on the shores of the Papallacta Lagoon. It is one of various wellness and recreation complexes in the Papallacta area, famous and built around volcanic thermal waters of a yellowish, crystal‑clear tone.

What to expect on site

  • Thermal pools and spa features. Public pools fed by thermal springs, hydromassage, turco and polar options for relaxation.
  • Family and activity options. A children’s toboggan, picnic areas, motor boat or canoe rides on the lagoon, sport fishing, a small canopy (zipline), self‑guided trails, and even swimming in the lagoon.
  • Accommodation and food. On‑site hotel rooms with private bath, cable television and Wi‑Fi; a weekend cafeteria and bar serving local dishes (trucha is highlighted). Camping space is available. There is also a viewpoint restaurant.

Costs

  • Entrance and basic fees. The fee for adults is $5 per person (12+), $2,50 for children (3–12) and also reduced fees for seniors/people with disabilities.
  • Room rates start at $30 USD for an adult single room.
  • Food prices. The menus is varied and prices affordable, starting with dishes from $3 USD; dishes are based on local gastronomy. Try trout dishes, which are fished in the area.

How to get there

  • From Quito, it is a 1-hour drive.
  • You could also get there by bus + taxi. The bus routes that cover Papallacta are usually Quito – Baeza or Quito – Tena. You could spend around $6 to $10 USD for a round trip with this option.
  • A cab is another option, more expensive though; you could pay starting at $70 for a way trip.

Practical tips

  • Confirm availability before going. Terjamanco is usually open every day from 6 a.m. and closes at a time depending on the area you want to visit. There might be schedule changes, so it is better to confirm availability through official channels before going.
  • Health and safety. Thermal waters are relaxing but can be hot; avoid long exposure if you have cardiovascular issues.
  • Arriving time. Try to arrive early, especially on weekends or holidays to secure parking and quieter pools.
  • Clothing. Take a swimsuit, a swim cap, a towel, sandals, and optionally googles. Also pack warm clothes for evenings and a waterproof layer for sudden rain.
  • Be patient when visiting the lagoon. If you want to visit the lagoon viewpoint, swim or take a boat ride, keep in mind that there is an extensive morning fog that might completely cover any view of the lagoon. Just be patient and wait a couple of hours if you arrive early in the morning; it usually dispels before 10 a.m.

Verdict: is Terjamanco worth visiting?

Absolutely! Terjamanco is a family-oriented and budget-friendly option for those who want to enjoy the nationally celebrated Papallacta terms. Not only does it offer the terms, but also a comprehensive experience that includes: a roughly-1-km.-long natural lagoon and a viewpoint; a couple of restaurants and a bar; canopy, boat rides, and sport fishing activities; lodging and a camping area; and plenty more recreational activities.
